Forklift on the left compared to a reach truck on the right

No warehouse operation is complete without a forklift, but there are many options to choose from. The terminology can get confusing at times, leaving some professionals asking what the difference is between forklifts and reach trucks and when to use each type.

At Barclay, we understand how crucial it is to make an informed choice, so we’ve compiled this guide to clear things up.

Forklifts vs. Reach Trucks

Conventional counterbalance forklifts are large machines with weights at the back to offset their loads. Reach trucks, by contrast, are more compact and often have a taller mast. Here’s a closer look at each type.

Forklifts

A conventional four-wheel forklift's main benefit is its high load capacity. Forklifts also come in multiple powertrain options, including electric, gas and diesel. These options, along with their greater stability, make counterbalance forklifts remarkably versatile and suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

On the flip side, counterbalance forklifts are bulkier, making them less maneuverable. They also cannot reach as high and often offer less visibility for the operator.

Reach Trucks

A compact reach truck's benefits and considerations are essentially the inverse of a conventional forklift. Because of their smaller size, they offer more visibility and are easier to maneuver around tight spaces. They also have taller masts, enabling them to reach pallets on higher shelves.

The main thing to consider is that they have a much lower load capacity. They also feature less powertrain variety and are less versatile.

When to Use a Forklift

Counterbalance forklifts are best for jobs dealing with heavy loads. They're a good fit for high-volume warehouses that must move large amounts of product in a short time. Their stability also makes them ideal for outdoor work, such as on construction sites.

When to Use a Reach Truck

Some reach trucks can lift around 5,500 pounds while most have lesser capacities, so these machines are better-suited to lighter loads. Reach trucks are also often used where aisles are narrow or there is a lot of vertical shelving, given their maneuverability and higher reach. Reach trucks are best for indoor warehouse operations.
