The Fall Protection Safety Training course advises on OSHA standards for fall protection and includes the importance of equipment inspection, information on general safety, a video and hands-on training.

In nearly every industry, there are areas where workers are exposed to fall hazards. Falls are among the most common sources of serious work related injuries and deaths. It is essential that employers assemble the work place in a manner that can prevent employees from falling off of overhead platforms, elevated workstations or into holes in the floor and walls. Developing and implementing comprehensive fall protection and safety training programs in the workplace can prevent many of these injuries and fatalities.

Once fall hazards have been identified, fall hazard elimination should be considered first. Typically known as “engineering out the hazard” fall elimination consists of redesigning the working environment, work processes and procedures. Fall prevention may be handled in a number of ways. Scaffolds, handrails, barriers and movable platforms can be constructed to protect workers employed at heights.

Where these devices are impractical, personal fall protection equipment such as full body harnesses, lanyards and retractable lifelines may be used. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires personal fall protection on behalf of workers working at various heights.

Safety lanyards are used to lessen the impact of a fall and come in various categories such as shock absorbing, single and twin leg, fall restraint, and self-retracting. Shock absorbing lanyards are used when a free-fall distance exceeds heights of two feet or more. Single and twin leg lanyards are similar in purpose to a shock-absorbing lanyard however are used in the construction industry and aerial lifts respectively.
