Taking good care of your forklift battery can greatly extend its useful life span. The expense of these batteries aligns with proper care so that you can get the most use possible out of them. Good maintenance ensures the greatest productivity and efficiency for your business. Even the best battery will fail prematurely if abused.
With a single charge, a forklift battery will usually provide about five hours of continuous battery life. This usually means that batteries need to be charged after every shift. Depending on use, a forklift battery will usually last for about five years, and with maintenance can often last up to seven.
A proper Battery Maintenance Program should be developed and followed regularly and should include Inspection – Charging – Fluid Levels & Safety precautions.
Charging and Overcharging
Charging a battery too often will shorten its lifespan. As well as possible damage to the battery, allowing the battery to discharge too much can cause changes to the amount of power supplied, which could cause damage to the electrical components and motor of the forklift. It is also important not to interrupt the charge cycle one you’ve started it.
Water Regularly After Charging
A forklift battery water level should be checked on a regular basis. Add water after charging to prevent overflowing. Overflow means loss of electrolyte, which can corrode the battery tray and other metal surfaces and decreases the output of your battery.
Keep it Clean
You should clean up any spills or overflows immediately, if they do occur. Always use a facemask or goggles, rubber gloves and apron when cleaning batteries. Battery gases are explosive; short circuits can cause sparks, which may result in an explosion.
Keep it Cool
A normal charge can increase the temperature of a battery by 15 degrees or more. If you are using your battery around a furnace or if your charger room is hot and poorly ventilated, it can be a problem. High temperatures can shorten battery life. Give your battery a break by charging it in a room that is cool and well ventilated.
